Empower House SA Selects Jenny Castro, Executive Director

SAN ANTONIO, TX, April 25, 2023—Empower House SA (formerly Martinez Street Women’s Center) announces the selection of Jenny Castro for Executive Director, effective April 25. The Board selected Castro for her experience, enthusiasm, and progressive leadership.

“The Board and I are thrilled to welcome Jenny Castro into the role of Executive Director of Empower House San Antonio. She is a passionate and thoughtful leader whose commitment to the organization has been steadfast throughout her time with us.” said Cassandra Vara, Empower House SA Board Chair. “We look forward to watching how Empower House SA grows in impact under Jenny’s mission-driven leadership.”

Castro first worked with Empower House as a promotora in 2008, providing health education and community outreach for programs. Since that time, she’s worked for a variety of nonprofits, eventually returning to the organization in 2019 as Director of Programs. In that role, Castro led Empower House SA’s response to COVID-19 – providing rental, utility and food assistance to community members who faced job loss and underemployment, as well as safe and accessible adult and youth programming throughout the pandemic. Additionally, she helped reimagine programs after COVID – expanding access to vital services for both youth and adults – parenting programs, mental health counseling, daily afterschool youth development programming including high impact tutoring and wrap around services.

As Executive Director, Castro will lead Empower House SA’s efforts to transform our communities through women and girls, collaborating with board members, staff, partners, donors and community members to advance the organization’s mission and future strategic goals.

“Empower House has been a force in our community for so many years,” Castro said. “I’m honored to be invited to lead in this new capacity, and I have so much hope for all we’ll accomplish together going forward.”
